The TLV proposes extended validity of price periods for substitutable medicines
The TLV wants to change the rules for how long the price of generics shall apply and be valid. The TLV proposes an increase in the price validity period from one to four months in order to increase patient safety and lay the foundation for more effective logistics while retaining satisfactory price pressure. Simultaneously the interim period which applies between the decision and the pricing period is extended to four months.

Unnecessarily expensive lipid medicines lose reimbursement today
Today the TLV's decisions in regard to the continued reimbursement of blood lipid medicines come into force. This means that Lipitor and Crestor at lower strengths (10 mg and 5 mg respectively) lose their reimbursement status and are thereby no longer part of the high cost threshold. Due to the TLV's decisions the collective costs for pharmaceuticals in Sweden may become 170 million Skr lower on an annual basis.

Pharmacy trade margin regulations being circulated for comments
The TLV is now circulating the regulations which shall contribute to increased accessibility for pharmacies in Sweden for comments. The regulations shall regulate the fees due to pharmacies for prescription medicines. They shall also standardise the handling of pharmaceutical copies to ensure the cheapest alternative on the market is always sold. These regulations come into force in July 2009.

The TLV reports Pfizer for misleading information
The TLV has today reported the pharmaceutical company Pfizer to the Pharmaceutical Information Practices Committee (NBL) for misleading information. The TLV considers that Pfizer has acted in contravention of the pharmaceutical industry's own ethical regulations when disseminating information to doctors in regard to the TLV's decision on the medicine Lipitor.

The TLV welcomes proposal which decreases pharmaceutical prices
The TLV welcomes LIF’s (Swedish Pharmaceutical Industry Association) proposal to decrease prices on original brand name drugs by 65% on the expiry of patents. The TLV has, in dialogue with LIF, developed a plan for how to carry out the price decreases. For instance, pharmaceutical companies will receive a communication to send in an application to decrease their prices.
